Eucalyptus
Little Star™
A small often multi-trunked
tree, 3 - 7m tall and 2 - 3m wide at the canopy.
The fine trunks
and branches are smooth, olive-green or gold, with small
glossy green foliage. The massed yellow and red star-shaped
buds break into thick creamy nectar-rich flowers from mid
summer to early winter, and occasionally spring.
The blossom
attracts honeyeaters and moths.
Hardy in alpine,
cool temperate to sub tropical and semi arid climates. Thrives
in full sun or light shade in moist clays, and will tolerate
seasonally wet conditions; neutral to acid pH. Suitable for
near coastal as well as inland gardens and is extremely frost
hardy.
Uses: A perfect choice for small gardens, or may be clustered three or five together to display
the beauty of trunks and blossom for dramatic
landscape effect. Create a lovely picture with an under-planting of fine lillies such as
Arthropodium milleflorum (Vanilla Lily) and Stylidium graminifolium (Triggerplant)
set amongst broad flat rocks. Tuck in some fine grasses (Poa spp) to complete the
scene. Above all, keep it simple.
Maintenance: Allow flowers to develop seed for parrots; only trim foliage as needed. Feed in early
spring or late summer with controlled release, low phosphorus fertilizer.
Bird illustrated: White-eared or New Norcia Honeyeater
