All
of these plants may be used in several ways, illustrating
their versatility in any landscape. Garden area may be limited,
yet there is often space for a group of containers on a
deck or patio, and many of these small shrubs, reaching
perhaps a metre or so in height and width, can be planted
to great effect in tubs, barrels and large pots. Low hedging
is widely admired in many landscapes, perhaps giving a gentle
change of direction to a pathway, or to offer a change of
visual level even in a flat site.
Mass
planting of particular varieties, such as Cherry Ripe™
, Orange Box™ or Rosy’s Baby™ will make
a spectacular impact with long flowering periods from late
summer through to early spring.
And
all of these plants are notable for their attraction to
honeyeaters … another way of providing habitat and
food for our native fauna, especially during the winter
months.
Maintenance
is simple. Give a light pruning once the flowering is finished,
and feed with low phosphorus controlled release fertiliser
in early spring or late summer.
