Grevillea
Orange
Box™
A
Box for the Birds.
A stunningly versatile shrub, dense and compact (40cm - 1.5m x
60cm-1.2m) with glossy dark foliage and
masses of bright orange flowers most of the year, extremely attractive to honeyeaters,
brush-tongued lorikeets as well as rosellas, all of which
feast upon the blossoms with enthusiasm. Well suited
to temperate, sub tropical and semi arid climates, it grows easily in moist clay loams or sandy soils
of a neutral pH. Full sun or semi shade is suitable;
extremely frost hardy, it may also be grown in a
near-coastal situation.
Uses: an outstanding low hedge which
may be kept trimmed as a strong and compact low hedge, or
allowed to grow taller as a clipped screen; it forms a handsome container plant, and a
specimen plant of particular impact when grown in mixed
plantings designed for bird habitat. Not only does it supply
nectar for honeyeaters, it forms excellent nesting habitat
for small wrens.
Maintenance: if hedging, remove leader shoots to develop compact lateral growth early
in life; once established, a "short back and sides" (frequent but light) will maintain shape. Feed
early spring or late summer with low phosphorus fertilizer. If container grown, use best
quality potting mix. Do not over water.

Allow to grow as an
informal shrub, requiring only light tip pruning after flowering is finished.
Clusters of showy orange flowers are adored by Spinebills and other honeyeaters.

Trim as a stunning flowering
hedge.

Orange Box makes a great hedge, for
sure. But for an informal garden, as part of a mixed shrubbery or screen, it is exceptional. Masses
of flower continually deck the branches, forever aquiver as the honeyeaters flit from cluster to
cluster in endless delight.
