Banksia
Black Magic
A compact
shrub (1 - 1.5 m H x 1 - 1.2m W) with dark glossy foliage,
much broader than the typical form of B. spinulosa, and an
attractive ‘layered’ look in which the branches are held
almost horizontally. The effect is strikingly architectural.
Rich golden candle flowers develop from buds set in autumn,
opening throughout winter and early spring to display dark
cherry styles which mature to a black-wine colour, a striking
effect not often seen in eastern Australian banksias. Very
attractive to honey-eating birds. Grows well in full sun or
quite deep shade, in well drained clay or sandy soils of
neutral to acid pH. Suitable for cool temperate to sub
tropical and semi arid climates, moderately frost tolerant and
suited to coastal situations.

Uses: plant beneath trees to create a mid-layer of
flowering and foliage; if space permits, plant as a copse or
group for visual impact; may also be planted as an informal
hedge and trimmed to shape as required.
Maintenance: feed in early spring or late summer with
low phosphorus controlled release fertilizer. Prune lightly as
required to maintain desired shape; remove spent flowers
unless leaving for seed cones to develop.
