Banksia Birthday Candles PBR

Banksia Birthday Candles PBR

An outstanding designer plant

A compact, dwarf shrub (35cm x 50-60cm) with neat dark foliage, bearing massed displays of nectar-rich golden-orange candles in late summer to winter.  Cute little pale green buds appear in early summer, with a long anticipation period as they steadily expand to full glory in autumn.

Birthday Candles grows well in the garden (up to 45cm x 50cm) or in a container (up to 35cm x 60cm). It thrives in temperate to sub tropical or semi arid climates, and is best in full sun or light shade in moist well drained soils, neutral to acid pH.  Tolerant of light frosts, it is also particularly suitable for coastal gardens.

Uses: This is a designer’s delight.  It is a stunning plant in a decorative container, or may be planted in the ground singly or in groups for a breath-taking display.  In addition to its impact on the human eye, it is highly attractive to honey-eating birds, adding to its desirability in the garden, or  as a courtyard or patio plant in a container.

If planting into containers, use only best quality, free draining, slightly acid potting mix. Protea Mix is ideal. First place 4cm of coarse gravel in bottom of container, add potting mix, position the plant and top up with mix. Mulch with coarse sand or fine gravel. Water in thoroughly initially, but do not over water once the plant is settled.

Maintenance: Use secateurs to remove spent flowers to promote new growth. Trim foliage to shape in spring or late summer. Feed in early spring/late summer with controlled release low phosphorus fertilizer suitable for native plants.  Water sparingly if grown in container, keep lightly moist in garden situation. Requires minimal maintenance: just a light trim to the foliage, and removal of spent flowers.

Whether grown in a container or mass planted in the garden, Birthday Candles is beyond compare. Flora for Fauna? Absolutely!
