Callistemon Summer Days™
A small arching free flowering shrub (60
- 90cm high x 1 - 1.2m wide),
with dense foliage and red new growth. The purple-red brushes open in late spring and continue
through summer, flowering much later than other small bottlebrushes. Nectar-rich flowers provide
plentiful food for honeyeaters, while wrens and other small insect feeders will feast off the
insects attracted to the flowers.
It grows well in open or semi shaded sites in moist clay or clay loams, in cool temperate to sub
tropical regions. Tolerates heavy frost, and will suit a second line coastal situation.
Uses: As low hedging or specimen planting mixed with other shrubs or beneath taller screening
plants. As it grows naturally along stream sides, it may be used beside pools or arching over small
ponds, to great effect.
Maintenance: trim off spent flowers in late summer, or prune harder in early spring to contain size
and compact habit. Feed with low phosphorus controlled release fertilizer in early spring or late
summer.
