Callistemon Mary MacKillop™
A dense lightly
weeping medium shrub (2 - 2.5m x 1 - 2m) with glossy leaves
and lettuce green new growth.
Large cardinal
red, bird attracting brushes highlight the foliage in spring
and summer. Grows well in full sun or light shade in climates
ranging from cool temperate to tropical, or semi arid with
adequate water. Thrives in moist sandy or clay loam soils,
neutral to acid pH, and will tolerate medium frosts. May also
be planted in near coastal gardens.
A pair of
beautiful sisters!
Callistemon Mary
MacKillop (L) and Callistemon Four
Seasons (R) are selections with the same parentage.
Look more closely and you will see that Mary MacKillop is
arching in habit, whilst Four Seasons weeps almost to the
ground, and both display their flowers clusters at the ends of
the branches. These two varieties set very little seed,
which in turn means the branches do not elongate excessively.
Uses: Plant as specimens or groups in gardens or streetscapes, as hedges, and looks
spectacular in a large tub. A dense plantation along a boundary or for screening will give a
brilliant flowering display over many months, and supply a constant flush of nectar for honeyeaters.
Maintenance: prune spent flowers in summer regularly to promote autumn flowering. Prune
harder occasionally to maintain shape or for hedge development. Feed in early spring or early summer
with controlled release low phosphorus fertilizer for best flowering results.
One of the best bottlebrushes you can choose to bring all kinds of
honeyeaters into your garden.
