Callistemon
Four Seasons™
A dense medium
sized shrub (1.8 - 2m high x 1.5 -1.8m wide), with a low
branching habit and pendulous foliage. Huge bunches of
crimson-pink flowers bloom
throughout the year. Nectar-rich flowers provide plentiful
food for honeyeaters, while wrens and other small insect
feeders will feast off the insects attracted to the flowers.
It grows well in open or semi shaded sites in moist clay or
clay loams, in cool temperate to sub tropical regions.
Tolerates moderate frost, and will suit a second line coastal
situation.
Uses: Plant for compact hedging, or specimen planting
mixed with other shrubs or beneath taller screening plants.
Also suitable for street tree planting. Particularly
spectacular clustered along shoreline of large water areas,
but also appropriate for smaller ponds and poolside plantings.
A pair of
beautiful sisters!
Callistemon
Mary MacKillop (L) and
Callistemon Four Seasons (R) are selections with the same
parentage. Look more closely and you will see that Mary
MacKillop is arching in habit, whilst Four Seasons weeps
almost to the ground, and both display their flowers clusters
at the ends of the branches. These two varieties set
very little seed, which in turn means the branches do not
elongate excessively.
Maintenance: Regular trimming of spent flowers promotes
continual new growth and vigorous budset for more flowers next
season. Feed with low phosphorus
controlled release fertilizer in early spring or late summer.
Use best quality potting medium if container grown, keep
moist.
